I feel like I won the fitness lottery. Trust me, I’ve been around the fitness block as a fitness writer and editor for the last 10-plus years. And finallyI have found an exercise group and instructor who are perfect for me. My fitness life had changed drastically after a near-fatal cycling accident in 2002, from which I suffered head trauma.Needless to say, it has been challenging mentally and physically. MYB is not about fitness fads or gimmicks, just the a healthy exercise regime, suited just for me, three days a week. It’s perfect for me now because not only do I get to spend three hours a week in mat classes with kind, funny and fitness minded exercisers, but the leader, Jeannie Carpentier is full of body knowledge and tailors the exercises to benefit you most and helps you move toward your fitness goals whether it’s to get rid of pesky aches and pains or to become a stronger, fitter athlete.
In my recent discovery of the Pilates benefits, I’ve been made to feel like a new member of an exclusive club without the pretentiousness. Perhaps a Pilates family is a better explanation. Jeannie, the leader of this supportive, fit family brings us all together and helps us function as and behave like a unit. She is a mother to us in that she cares deeply about every member of the Pilates family and fosters bonding through regular exercise. She highlights the best in all of us and gets us to bond through our practice of Pilates. I never expected to have one of my first Pilates mat classes with Olympian, but I did. Alongside equestrian Olympian Bobby, I grunted through the Hundred, which is a Pilates classic move that challenges your core and your upper body. The one-on-one instruction is also a great way for me to make Pilates progress because I’m reminded of the correct ways and given modifications movements, so this will surely deliver results in strength and flexibility.
I’m convinced my new Pilates family will help maintain exercise but improve in all areas of health- like hydrating. Seriously, on hot North Carolina days, I’m tempted to not burn a single calorie by vegetating all day near the air conditioning. But Pilates has me moving, run-walking to classes and exercising my pup some. I feel like I’m in the middle of a strength, health-makeover and I’m so thankful for it.

I have been so excited to get this Blog started! The Pilates family now has a voice to reach out to others who have not made it in the Studio YET! I (Jeannie) plan on incorporating Pilates students’ insight into my Blog to keep it fresh and current. I have to admit, I instruct A LOT and am a Weekend Warrior whenever possible. Therefore, I don’t always sit at my computer to document the latest news. My adventures/sports will also be a part of this Blog….so stay tuned…..there will be photos and inspirational stories and words to share. I know it’s fun and exciting to live vicariously through other’s journeys…I do too!.
